Not Smiling Clown is perhaps the most haunting of Malek’s abstract watercolor portraits. The inclusion of brown in his palate gives the painting a murky depth that the bright colors of his other works rarely reach. The color washes that carry the viewers gaze back and forth between the dark eyes and the pronounced lips still bear the hallmark of Malek’s fluid hand, but in this case the tone of his colors is more somber to match the subject matter. Not Smiling Clown truly shows Malek’s talent at eliciting emotion through color.
Not Smiling Clown is a small limited edition print and would look fantastic in a welllit room where the natural sunlight will best pick up the subtleties of the somber colors. Picking interior design? This intriguing portrait would also hang well together with others from the Abstract Portrait series on a living room or study wall. Consider hanging this piece with Mysterious Rebeka, also from the Portrait series, for a pair of paintings that can tell a hundred compelling stories.
