Mysterious Rebeka depicts a woman casting a sidelong glance at the viewer while wearing a playful smirk that leads you to wonder what she’s up to. While Malek’s overlapping color washes seem to mask any distinct formal qualities of the face, he is still able to convey the femininity of the subject through the arch of the brow, the almond shape of the eyes and the abstracted shapeliness of the lips. The blue along the top of the page seems to become hair and falls away to the side as if tucked behind the ear. The false depth this technique creates makes it seem possible that we are viewing Rebeka through a window and that the rest of her is just out of sight. Or is it Rebeka who is viewing us?
Mysterious Rebeka is a small limited edition print and would hang well in a study, in front of a computer desk, or in any small space that requires a painting that won’t overpower the room. Picking your interior design accents? A grouping of works from Malek’s intriguing Portrait series would make a delightful centerpiece on a living room wall or on any large wall space. Consider hanging this piece with Blue Face and Yellow Light, from the Portrait series, for a pair of paintings whose stories will seem to intertwine.
