This watercolour by artist Toby Malek gives the viewer the feeling of a lush garden in full summer bloom. The deep shades of green and purple definitively evoking a verdant garden. This abstract print uses the technique of dropping-in-colour on the canvas without a specific result in mind – a way of meditating on the medium and seeing where the colours blend into each other.
Executed during Malek’s Austrian period, Jungle Fever forms part of a series of abstract floral-like prints that were created in a contemplative yet controlled space. While begun without a preconceived end, these abstracts were driven by random inspiration once begun in much the same manner as the automatists first did. Artists such as Miró, Gorky and Pollock derived inspiration from using paint in a similar fashion – exploring their imagination through action.
This summer print may inspire any interior design concept by adding a burst of green to a home, office or other creative space. Jungle Fever goes especially well with Malek’s Jungle Meeting and Summer Foliage due to the comparable colour palate but can be offset by one or more of Malek’s diminutive abstracts.
